Mr. Mike Patterson was named as one of the one-hundred three mathematics and science teachers selected as recipients of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. 

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is awarded annually to the best pre-college-level science and mathematics teachers from across the country. The winners are selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial selection process done at the state level.

Winners of this Presidential honor receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion. They also receive an expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for an awards ceremony and several days of educational and celebratory events, including visits with members of Congress and science agency leaders.

Congratuations to Lidiya Kilchenko who was chosen as the 2011 Environmental Youth Ambassador during the first ever Environmental Youth Summit held this past Saturday, May 22, at the Springs Preserve. Lidiya will be recognized and receive her scholarship at the CCSD Board of School Trustees Meeting this Thursday, May 27, at 4:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Edward A. Greer Education Center, 2832 East Flamingo Road.

Congratulations to Liset Puentes for being elected 2010-11 Nevada FBLA State President. Nevada FBLA State Business Leadership Conference was held April 18-20, 2010, in Las Vegas at Imperial Palace.

Congratulations to Architectural Design student Logan Ziegler who took second place in the Western Regional competition for the National Association of Women In Construction CAD Design Drafting Scholarship Awards Contest. Logan’s satellite library design focused on Green Building techniques and Sustanable Design. Excellent work Logan!

On May 13, 2010, sixteen Business and Finance students represented A-TECH at the 2010 Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge, which was held at the Rio Hotel. Seniors Skylar Dunn, Jovito Basco, Jessica Lee and Michelle Lutao were second-place winners.

Wednesday, April 14 the Las Vegas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects presented the awards for the 2010 Student Design Awards.  A-TECH took three of the four individual design awards in the competition.  Senior Logan Ziegler received the Honor award for the Most Outstanding design in the contest.  Senior Ryley Hill and Junior Adrian Plata took both Honorable Mention awards.  Seven CCSD schools competed in the contest with more than one-hundred entries.  Congratulations Architecture students!

Congratulations to Andrew Agustin who won the NASC election for the AAA Vice Presidency. He will serve on the NASC State Board for the 2010 – 2011 school year.

A-TECH students created artwork that represented the celebration of Earth Day’s 40th Anniversary and highlighted the RTC’s sustainable initiative “quicker, cleaner, greener.”  A-TECH students Matthew Judd and Kate Wakeman were selected as the top two winners and their art work is now being displayed on a 40ft. hybrid bus which was unveiled at an Earth Day special event. Matthew Judd will have his artwork displayed on the outside of the RTC bus for one year. His theme “Its in our hands,” shows the earth sick on one side and well on the other held by two large hands. Kate Wakeman’s “Save Our  Planet,”  artwork will be displayed inside the bus for one year. Congratulations to Ms. Woodbury and her Graphic Design students!

Congratulations to the A-TECH Key Club chapter for their success during the District Convention held in Sacramento, California. A-TECH won a total of 12 club and individual awards including Distinguished Club, Increased Membership, and Outstanding Website. Special congratulations to Adviser Scott Meikle and chapter leaders Kameron VanWoerkom, Krystina Kamjourn, and Pyline Tangsuvanich who were each recognized for their leadership talent.

Congratulations to Freshmen Trimaan Malik and Alex Tin who finished in the top 8 in International Extemporaneous Speaking at the Golden Desert Forensics League District tournament, which ended on Saturday! Alex was a finalist, and Trimaan was one of two semi-finalists. The two Mavericks were the last freshmen in a competition dominated by juniors and seniors, and performed in an outstanding fashion, and were two of the three freshmen to advance so far in the entire event.

In addition, A-TECH was recognized by the National Forensics League as the Golden Desert District’s Outstanding Chapter of the Year, and it finished in a tie for second-place for members’ performance in the Impromptu speaking events for the course of the season.

A-TECH had an outstanding showing at the National History Day competition for Southern Nevada.  54 A-TECH students attended the event and A-TECH had the most wins for a high school with 9.

Our first place winners are eligible to attend the national competition in College Park, Maryland, at the University of Maryland, June 13-17.

Congratulations to Juniors Tyler Seppala and Anna Kiyantseva who are recipients of the 2010 Harvard Prize Book. They were selected from a pool of applicants from over 60 high schools throughout Nevada. Tyler and Anna will be honored at a reception Thursday, April 22 at the Park Towers. The Harvard Prize Book represents one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a student in the junior class.

Senior Architecture students Jeniifer Li and Edgar Vargas have spent the better part of this school year interning at Family Promise, an organization that looks for solutions to homelessness in Nevada. Both students learned quite a lot through the internship process and the experience has changed their preconceived notions of being homeless. As a part of their internship they are charged with raising awareness of the third annual Cardboard City event which will occur at 5:00 p.m. April 24 at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 Lindell Road.

Congratulations to the A-TECH Architectural Design program that swept the awards for the local competition of the National Association of Women In Construction CAD Design Drafting Scholarship Awards Contest. Students were challenged to design a satellite library and submit a set of plans for its construction.

A-TECH students speak with their peers in Haiti about the challenges they have faced after the earthquake that hit their country on January 12, 2010.

On Monday, March 22 and Wednesday, March 24 students in Mr. Knoeppel’s and Mr. Johannessohn’s CADD classes participated in video conferences with students from Haiti to discuss the effects of the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010. The student centered conversations focused on the relief efforts, current challenges faced by the Haitian people, and the challenge to rebuild better, safer schools in Haiti.

Congratulations to Junior Tyler Seppala winner of the 2010 Student Model Bridge Building Contest. Tyler’s bridge weighed 11.1 grams and held a weight of 36.6 pounds for an overall efficiency of 1495.62. Junior Michael Tully placed seventh and A-TECH placed fourth overall in the team competition. Congratuations to Mr. Charles and all the students in his Engineering classes.

On Friday, February 12 A-TECH’s DECA chapter held a fundraiser to help support the relief efforts in Haiti. On Monday, March 1 A-TECH’s DECA chapter presented Gary Allen from the American Red Cross with a check for three-hundred eighty dollars. Thanks to our DECA chapter and all those who supported Haiti in its time of need.

On Thursday, February 25, 2010, A-TECH’s Business and Finance seniors participated in the annual Lemonade Sales Challenge. Entrepreneurship seniors in Ms. Stidhum’s class sold lemonade in the Student Activities Center (SAC) during both lunches. Seniors were divided into two teams: RAHN-DE-VOO (girls) and THE JUICE (boys).
For the second year in a row, the winning team was located in the back of the SAC. Congratulations to RAHN-DE-VOO for having almost $1,000 in sales. Runner-up THE JUICE was also impressive with over $700 in sales.
This project supported a good cause since all proceeds raised from lemonade sales go to the March of Dimes charity. Thanks to this year’s teams for raising over $1,600 to help support premature babies.

Congratulations to Rong Fu, who represented A-TECH at the local Rotary Club Speech Competition! Rong wrote a 6 – 8 minute speech on the theme, “The Future of Rotary is Up to You.” A-TECH’s Speech teacher, Mrs. Bouchard, attended the competition with Rong and said, “Rong wrote a great speech and presented it with professionalism; I was very proud of her!” Rong represented A-TECH well and won a $50 cash prize! Great job, Rong! Good luck in your future speech endeavors!

A-TECH student, Kevin Wright, is one of four CCSD students to be recognized among America’s 102 most outstanding youth volunteers. He will be honored as a Distinguished Finalist in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for exemplary acts of volunteerism.

Congratulations to Mr. Mike Patterson winner of a 2009 Milken Educator Award. Mr. Patterson, one of only fifty-four teachers selected nationwide, was surprised at an assembly in his honor on Friday, February 26 at Advanced Technologies Academy. In attendance was Michael Milken of the Milken Family Foundation, Dr. Keith Rheault the Superintendent of Public Instruction for the State of Nevada, and Clark County School District Superintendent Dr. Walt Rulffes among other school district dignitaries and past Milken Educator Award winners. Along with this prestigious award Mr. Patterson will receive a check for $25,000 to be presented during a dinner and recognition ceremony held during the annual Milken Educator Forum later this spring. Congratulations Mr. Patterson!
