Special Congratulations go to Gabby Kanter and Timothy Ponciano, who were selected to represent A-TECH at the Club Level Rotary Speech Contest Competition, which will take place on February 23rd. Great job, Gabby and Timothy and GOOD LUCK at the next competition!

Recently, A-TECH DECA participated in the International Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City, UT.  Over 15,000 students from all 50 states and 16 countries competed, presented and networked with and against each other for the four day conference, in all areas of marketing.  DECA students took exams, performed impromptu role plays depicting business scenarios, and presented new ideas for business in areas of advertising, promotion and entrepreneurship.

Matthew Slomka led A-TECH’s performers by finishing in the top 20 in the Food Marketing Event.  Other members achieving Awards of Excellence include Paloma Guerrero, Ryan Rivera, Laura Sullivan, Jennifer Tang, John Moran, Bo Ying Fu, James Gan, Shon Govan and Claire Guansing.  Other Mavericks representing A-TECH included Deanna Tiao, Vivian Shen, Jordan Bauzon, Dorian Valdivia, Sean Lim and Alex Uboldi.

McKenna Murray, who is a senior at Advanced Technologies Academy, has been awarded $1,000 for 2nd place in the Nevada Security Association Youth Scholarship. McKenna will be choosing between Seattle University or the University of Utah for her future studies. McKenna has been super busy with her scholastic and extra-curricular activities which include National Secretary of Future Business Leaders of America, Executive VP of NV Future Business Leaders of America, President of College Prep Club, Member of National Honor Society, Student Math & Reading Tutor and Freshman Mentor and a Self-Development Program at church in which she volunteered over 400hrs. Many of these hours included helping to serve food to the homeless, volunteer work at Three Square Food Bank, tutoring ill children at Sunrise Children’s Hospital, among many others. She did this all while maintaining a 4.5 GPA! McKenna’s father is Firefighter Jeffrey Murray who works for the Las Vegas Fire Rescue Station 8.

The Nevada Security Association is a state-wide trade association comprising of licensed life-safety, Surveillance and Intrusion Alarm companies and operators, and suppliers of products and services to our industry. The NSA’s mission is to promote growth and professionalism in the security and life safety industry throughout Nevada.

Congratulations to Max Howald and Matthew Slomka for qualifying for the Southern Nevada Section of the 2012 National Chemistry Olympiad Exam.

During the first weekend of Spring Break; Michelle Chiu, Max Howald, Matthew Slomka, and Pavel Sorkin took the preliminary round exam. They competed against some of the top chemistry students in the Las Vegas area. Max Howald had the highest score of all participants.

Max and Matt will take the written and lab exams April 20 and 21 to qualify for the 20 spots on the National Chemistry Olympiad team.

Congratulations to the A-TECH Science Bowl team which went undefeated for the entire Regional Science Bowl Competition that was held Saturday, February 4 at the PBS building. A-TECH emerged the region winner after defeating teams from Green Valley, Meadows, Shadow Ridge, Palo Verde and Centennial. Team members Max Howald (team captain), Bridget Elizan, Alexander Koo, Adam Tarr, and Mateusz Podzorski won $5000.00 and an all expense paid trip to Washington DC in April to compete in the National Science Bowl competition. Congratulations to Bo-Ying Fu whose entry in the NOW Foundation’s Love Your Body Day poster contest was the winner in Category 3 – High School. As one of the winning designs, Bo’s poster will be featured on the NOW Foundation website, and it may be included in other Love Your Body campaign promotions. Bo will also be awarded a $150 prize.

Congratulations to Bo-Ying Fu who won second place in the CCSD Poetry Out Loud contest. Bo-Ying received a check for $150 for her performance of “Echo” by Christina Rossetti, and “Cartoon Physics, Pt. 1″ by Nick Flynn.

With an aerodynamic shape to withstand winds from a class five hurricane, “The Surge” offers a place of gathering for recreational activities as well as a safe haven for the community.  The competition sponsored by Kawneer and administered by the AIAS, challenged students to design a crisis-ready stadium where people  congregate to engage in large social events as well serving as a rallying point in times of need.

Participants were challenged to address specific design elements and were evaluated on the stadium’s response to the realities of climate change and natural disasters such as hurricanes, original use of weather resistive design elements and crisis-ready solutions for today’s modern facilities, and creative use of space for entertainment and refuge purposes.

On Thursday, September 15, 2011 the U.S. Department of Education named Advanced Technologies Academy as a 2011 National Blue Ribbon school based on its overall academic excellence and success. This National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private schools that are ranked among each state’s highest performing schools as measured by performance on state assessments.

Congratulations to Natasha Sushenko, James Gan, Cody Andersen, and Max Howald who have achieved National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalist status. These seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for 8,300 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $34 million. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship® award, Semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition.

The National Merit Scholarship Program recognized Dana Dimalanta, Alan Aquino, and Mitchell Garland as Commended Students for their exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the PSAT. Although they will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition.

Congratulations to Senior Daniel Waqar who was elected Chairman of the School Board Student Advisory Committee on Tuesday, October 4 at the first regular meeting.

Congratulations to Business & Finance senior McKenna Murray, who was elected as National Secretary during the 2011 FBLA National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Congratulations to Hannah Stover who won the 2012 CTE Month Theme Logo Contest.  Career and Technical Education students were challenged to create a logo based on the 2012 CTE Month theme, CTE: Careers Through Education. Hannah won $250 and a copy of Adobe Design Standard (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Acrobat) software. Her teacher Mrs. McLavy will also receive a copy of the software. Hannah’s winning design will be featured on 2012 CTE Month products!

Rodolpho Pineda, 8, ponders a homework problem May 3 in the Torino Classroom at Sunrise Children’s Hospital, 3186 S. Maryland Parkway. His tutor, Iun Chen, is a student at Advanced Technologies Academy and makes weekly visits to the classroom to help Rodolpho, a cancer survivor, and other students who survived life-threatening illnesses.

Congratulations to Justin McClain who is the 2010-2011 First Place National Winner of the National Association of Women in Construction CAD/DESIGN/DRAFTING Scholarship Award Competition. Justin designed a Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home for a family of five which included accomodations for a family member with Cerebal Palsy. Justin will receive awards for his local first place Chapter 74 win and his first place Region 12 win at a NAWIC Chapter meeting Wednesday, May 18. Justin’s national recognition will occur this summer. Congratulations Justin for a job well done!

Congratulations to senior Ryan Dungee who earned a first place award in the 2011 Cox Stars of Science challenge. Ryan created a two minute video about applied science in the Las Vegas valley. Ryans winning video addressed hydroelectric and solar energy as well as water in Lake Mead. Ryan received a check for $1000. His sponsor Mr. Knoeppel and A-TECH also receive checks for $500. Congratulations Ryan for a job well done!

Congratulations to Joshua Gray who was selected as one of the 1,000 talented students to receive a 2011 Gates Millenium Scholarship. This good-through-graduation scholarship can be used at any college or university of Joshua’s choice. The Gates Millennium Scholars program will also provide Joshua with personal and professional development through their leadership program along with academic support throughout his college career. Outstanding job Joshua!

On Wednesday, April 13, at the “Historic Fifth Street School – Downtown,” the Las Vegas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects held the 2011 AIA High School Design Awards. This years contest challenged students re-think affordable housing in the Las Vegas valley. A-TECH submitted 54 of the 150 district wide entries. A-TECH swept the student awards placing 1-2-3 and also took home the Dale Scheideman school award of $500.00 for the best master plan.

On April 13, 2011, twelve Business and Finance students represented A-TECH at the 2011 Junior Achievement Stock Market Challenge, which was held at the Four Seasons Hotel. Congratulations to this year’s champions Joshua Gray, Lidiya Kilchenko, Michelle O’Brien, and Liset Puentes. Second place winners were Justin Bauzon, Layla Garcia, Jonathan Kenerson, and Aneesala Wongkovit. Also finishing strong were juniors Cody Andersen, Daniel Henry, Sean Lim, and Alexandre Uboldi.

Congratulations Ms. O’Day! Ms. O’Day received the 2011 Patricia Behring Award for her efforts in promoting and supporting National History Day. This award is only given out once a year to one teacher in each state. A-TECH is so proud of you!

Congratulations to Kyle Kithas and Sonya Snyder who were selected as 2011 RTC Laptop Scholarship Contest winners. Students were asked to write an essay about how they could reduce their carbon footprint by using the services offered by the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada. Each student will be recognized and awarded their laptop computer by the RTC Board on April 14,2011, at 8:45 a.m. in the Commission Chambers of the Clark County Government Center located at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. Congratulations Kyle and Sonya!

Congratulations to the A-TECH Architectural Design program that swept the awards for the local competition of the National Association of Women In Construction CAD Design Drafting Scholarship Awards Contest. Students were challenged to design a home in a historic neighborhood for a family of 5 whose youngest child has Cerebral Palsy.

On Saturday, March 12, representatives of A-TECH won the World Affairs Council of Las Vegas’ Academic WorldQuest competition. The team of Cody Andersen, Ryan Dungee, Michael Tully, and Daniel Waqar completed the 10 round competition tied with the team from the Meadows School, and captured the title by winning the Tie-Break round. The team’s win qualifies them to compete in the national finals, which will be held in Washington, D.C. at the end of April. Also, A-TECH’s second team — Jesus Espinoza, Jonathan Kenerson, Anna Kiyantseva, and McKenna Murray — competed successfully. Congratulations to all members and their coaches, Ms. ODay and Ms. Reed!

CONGRATULATIONS to Stanley Blake and Francisco Lopez Martinez who successfully represented A-TECH at the Rotary Club Speech Contest on Thursday, February 17th! They presented their speeches at Lowry’s resturant, for a local club meeting of the Rotary Club, which was full to capacity. Congratulations A-TECH DECA for outstanding performance at this year’s State Career Development Conference! Mr. DeMaio received the award for Advisor of the Year and A-TECH’s chapter received the Sweepstakes award, which means A-TECH ranked first place overall in competitions. A-TECH had eight state champions and twenty-three top three finishes. Outstanding job Mr. DeMaio and Students!

Congratulations to Advanced Technologies Academy senior Anna Kiyantseva who has been selected as a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Finalists, which represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, include the highest-scoring entrants in each state. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,400 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million, that will be offered this spring.

This month Semifinalists were notified by mail at their home addresses if they have advanced to Finalist standing. High school principals were notified and provided with a certificate to present to each Finalist. All winners of Merit Scholarship awards are chosen from the Finalist group, based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments–without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluate: the Finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the Finalist’s own essay.

Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 250 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,900 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2011 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 275,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Congratulations to the 12 members of the Mavericks Forensics team who combined to take second-place at the Clark county Championships over the weekend. Alexander Tin led all members when he posted four perfect rounds and claimed the Foreign Extempoaneous Speaking championship. Also scoring for A-TECH were Cody Andersen (third-place in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate); Evan Shobert (fifth-place in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate and 7th place in Impromptu Speaking); and Michael Tully (7th place in Varsity Senate).

The Sun Youth Forum, sponsored by the Las Vegas Journal, was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center on November 23, 2010. Participants discussed various local, state, national and international issues at the conference, and seven students were assigned discussion topics to be debated by representatives of Clark County high schools.

On Saturday evening, November 22, 2010, Liberty Leavitt, A-TECH’s Recruiting and Magnet Theme Coordinator, was honored by the Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation as Volunter of the Year at the 17th Annual Profiles of Courage dinner. Jeff Gordon, President/CEO and Lenny Ware, NCCF Director of Education, both spoke to Liberty’s dedication to the foundation’s education program that gives critically ill children an opportunity to continue their educations at the inpatient classroom located at Sunrise Children’s Hospital Pediatric Oncology Unit. Liberty created NCCF’s tutoring program, and her A-TECH Student Ambassadors have given thousands of community service hours to tutoring children with critical illnesses so that they do not get too behind in their studies. The program flourished during the 2009-10 school year and is flourishing still. The NCCF has officially become A-TECH’s community partner.

Three seniors from Advanced Technologies Academy have been named as 2010 National Merit Commended Students. Congratulations to Sarah Fanning, Christine Jung and Yulia Kravtsova. These young ladies qualified by scoring in the top 5 percent of all students who took the PSAT/NMSQT exam in their junior year. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit® Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. Congratulations Sarah, Christine, and Yulia.

DECA and FBLA members attended the 2010 Fall Leadership Extravaganza at Cashman Center on October 28. Students attended workshops on chapter success, personal leadership, and etiquette training for members and advisors of Nevada DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, and HOSA. Students also had a chance to meet their State Officers and discover the benefits of their CTSO membership.
