Safe Community Partnership and Outdoor Promotions is calling all young and aspiring artists, grades Kindergarten-12, to create a new bus shelter or inside-bus advertisement for pedestrians about walking safely.

INSTRUCTIONS: The message of the project needs to focus on walking safely in a cross walk. This may include pedestrian facts and/or pictures. Inside-bus advertisements have no maximum length and are to be seen and read by bus passengers. Bus shelter advertisements must be short for passing motorists to see and read. Projects may be designed however you would like (examples: computer graphics or designed, drawn, typed, colored, painted)

AWARDS: Grand Prize: Apple MacBook Secondary prizes include: Helmets, Bikes, and other various fun safety prizes
*Winning posters will be seen on bus shelters and in CAT buses!!

Kids Voting Making an Impact Contest

2011-2012 Making An Impact Contest
Deadlines:
• Entries must be postmarked by February 1st.
• Contest winners will be announced during the week of February 6th – 10th.
Guidelines
• 6th – 12th grade students are eligible to participate in the contest.
• Students can work in groups of no more than 4.
• There are two categories: 6 – 8th grade and 9 – 12th grade. A winner will be selected from each category.
• Students must submit a three-page essay that explains their service learning or civic engagement project.
• Videos and pictures are highly encouraged as supporting documentation of project.
• “Entry Form”, “Parental Consent Form” and at least 2 reference letters must accompany every essay. Entries that do not have this information will not be accepted.
• All submissions become the property of Kids Voting USA and may be reproduced in its
publications or merchandise.
• Offensive or inappropriate projects will not be accepted.

Judging:
• Projects will be judged on originality, need, impact, collaboration with other groups,
communication and adherence to contest guidelines.

Prizes:
• Grand prize is a trip to Washington D.C. (One winning group for the 6 – 8th grade category and 9 – 12th grade category) The winning groups (with one sponsor each) will be flown to Washington D.C. on March 28th. They will participate in the “Engaging Today’s Youth for Tomorrow’s Civic Leadership” symposium and luncheon on March 29th, and then they will spend the day touring the nation’s capital on March 30th. The winners will depart Washington D.C. on March 30th.
• Winners will be featured on the Kids Voting USA Web site and newsletter, Ballot Box Bulletin.

AIAS Students Place Second in National Design Contest

The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and Kawneer, a leading producer of commercial construction systems, recently announced the winners of a national student design competition. Congratulations to Dana Dimalanta, Brianna Silva, Remi Ziems, and Miranda Mead, who received Second place for their Crisis Ready Stadium “The Surge”, set in Tallahassee, Florida.

With an aerodynamic shape to withstand winds from a class five hurricane, “The Surge” offers a place of gathering for recreational activities as well as a safe haven for the community. The competition sponsored by Kawneer and administered by the AIAS, challenged students to design a crisis-ready stadium where people congregate to engage in large social events as well serving as a rallying point in times of need.

Participants were challenged to address specific design elements and were evaluated on the stadium’s response to the realities of climate change and natural disasters such as hurricanes, original use of weather resistive design elements and crisis-ready solutions for today’s modern facilities, and creative use of space for entertainment and refuge purposes.

Congratulations to Dana, Brianna, Remi, Miranda, and their advisers Mr. Knoeppel and Mr. Johannessohn.

Transportation – Late Busses

Transportation has the Late buses divided into two different categories. There are buses that leave ATA at 4:00 pm to go to the South Hub at K.O. Knudson Middle School. These students should be out at the buses no later than 3:50 pm. ATA is the north hub (NH) and the north hub buses leave ATA at 4:30 pm. There is a schedule posted in student services with all the late activities routes listed and what hub each route is assigned. A transportation investigator, also, is at ATA by 4:00 pm to assist students to find there correct buses.

Architecture Students Sweep 2011 AIA Competition

On Wednesday, April 13, at the “Historic Fifth Street School – Downtown,” the Las Vegas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects held the 2011 AIA High School Design Awards. This years contest challenged students re-think affordable housing in the Las Vegas valley. A-TECH submitted 54 of the 150 district wide entries. A-TECH swept the student awards placing 1-2-3 and also took home the Dale Scheideman school award of $500.00 for the best master plan.

On Saturday, March 12, representatives of A-TECH won the World Affairs Council of Las Vegas’ Academic WorldQuest competition. The team of Cody Andersen, Ryan Dungee, Michael Tully, and Daniel Waqar completed the 10 round competition tied with the team from the Meadows School, and captured the title by winning the Tie-Break round. The team’s win qualifies them to compete in the national finals, which will be held in Washington, D.C. at the end of April. Also, A-TECH’s second team — Jesus Espinoza, Jonathan Kenerson, Anna Kiyantseva, and McKenna Murray — competed successfully. Congratulations to all members and their coaches, Ms. ODay and Ms. Reed!

CONGRATULATIONS to Stanley Blake and Francisco Lopez Martinez who successfully represented A-TECH at the Rotary Club Speech Contest on Thursday, February 17th! They presented their speeches at Lowry’s resturant, for a local club meeting of the Rotary Club, which was full to capacity. Francisco’s 4th place win earned him a $50 prize and Stanley’s 2nd place win earned him a $150 prize! GREAT JOB, Stanley and Francisco! Good luck in your future speaking endeavors!

Congratulations A-TECH DECA for outstanding performance at this year’s State Career Development Conference! Mr. DeMaio received the award for Advisor of the Year and A-TECH’s chapter received the Sweepstakes award, which means A-TECH ranked first place overall in competitions. A-TECH had eight state champions and twenty-three top three finishes. Outstanding job Mr. DeMaio and Students!

Congratulations to Advanced Technologies Academy senior Anna Kiyantseva who has been selected as a Finalist in the National Merit Scholarship competition. Finalists, which represent less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, include the highest-scoring entrants in each state. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,400 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million, that will be offered this spring.

This month Semifinalists were notified by mail at their home addresses if they have advanced to Finalist standing. High school principals were notified and provided with a certificate to present to each Finalist. All winners of Merit Scholarship awards are chosen from the Finalist group, based on their abilities, skills, and accomplishments–without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference. A variety of information is available for NMSC selectors to evaluate: the Finalist’s academic record, information about the school’s curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the high school official’s written recommendation, information about the student’s activities and leadership, and the Finalist’s own essay.

Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 250 corporations and business organizations for Finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 200 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,900 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for Finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2011 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 275,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Congratulations to the 12 members of the Mavericks Forensics team who combined to take second-place at the Clark county Championships over the weekend. Alexander Tin led all members when he posted four perfect rounds and claimed the Foreign Extempoaneous Speaking championship. Also scoring for A-TECH were Cody Andersen (third-place in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate); Evan Shobert (fifth-place in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate and 7th place in Impromptu Speaking); and Michael Tully (7th place in Varsity Senate).

Congratulations to De’Armon Hall who won 1st place at the Sunrise Regional Wrestling Championship on Saturday, February 12. This win makes De’Armon the only wrestler in the Clark County School District, for the Sunrise Region Division, to win Regional 4 times. Best of luck to De’Armon at the State Wrestling Champioships.

American Heart Association Food Festival Logo Winner

Ms. Joyce O’Day, World History Teacher at Advanced Technologies Academy, has been invited to participate in a national seminar this January in Birmingham, Alabama. The project, Civic Voices, involves selected teachers from around the world in the task of preserving the legacy of their countries’ democratic struggles. Ms. O’Day has developed a project using primary source documents from the Civil Rights Movement in Southern Nevada, and along with her students, she will be collecting and recording oral histories from activists that will be made available to an online democracy memory bank at www.civicvoices.org. The site also provides a rich collection of resources for classroom projects, including an international student survey, student essays from around the world, background readings on core civic concepts, and lesson ideas.

Henry Nikogosyan – Sun Youth Forum Winner

Congratulations to Advanced Technologies Academy senior Henry Nikogosyan who was one of only 28 of the 400 Sun Youth Forum members who were selected to write an article on their group’s topic for publication. His article on international affairs, “Around the World,” will appear the Las Vegas Sun. Because of his outstanding debate/discussion skills,Henry was also selected to attend a special luncheon on December 8, 2010 at the Las Vegas Country Club where a separate scholarship drawing took place.

The Sun Youth Forum, sponsored by the Las Vegas Journal, was held at the Las Vegas Convention Center on November 23, 2010. Participants discussed various local, state, national and international issues at the conference, and seven students were assigned discussion topics to be debated by representatives of Clark County high schools.

Teacher Mike Patterson received balloons and flowers in his classroom on December 9th from Tracy Gruber of the Nevada Department of Education and David Thiel from the Clark County School District Curriculum and Professional Development Department. The special recognition celebrates Mr. Patterson’s upcoming trip to Washington D.C. to receive his Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science teaching. During his trip Mr. Patterson will attend an awards ceremony and several days of educational and celebratory events, including visits with members of Congress and science agency leaders. Congratulations Mr. Patterson!
